How to Prepare for an Interview: Part 1 of 4

Welcome to the first in a small series of articles where we’ll discuss things to consider when preparing for an interview! First up: the initial phone call.

What do I do when I get a Call?

Receiving Phone Calls

  • Provide an accurate phone number on your resume and ensure your phone can receive voice calls.

  • Set up your voicemail service and record your name in the greeting. Record a new greeting, if necessary, but keep it short and to the point.

Let it go to Voicemail

  • It may seem counterintuitive, but this gives you a chance to refresh your memory of the company information and review the job description so that you are prepared for a conversation.

  • Do not answer your phone if you are indisposed (i.e., in the middle of an intense workout, in the bathroom, etc.)

  • Recruiters understand that candidates may be working or otherwise engaged. Aim to return the call within 8 business hours.

Leaving a Message

  • Recruiters are notoriously hard to get in contact with. If you call back and have to leave a voicemail in return, outline your availability to accept a call over the next couple of days so that they can call you back.

  • Give them the option to email, text, etc., which can significantly speed up the process of connecting.

  • Slow down when you say your name and phone number, allowing the recruiter to write down the information while listening to your message. Repeat your name and phone number before hanging up. (Yes, even with modern wonders like caller ID.)

Tune in next time for: “Hooray! I’ve scheduled an interview! How do I prepare?”
