How to Respond to Inappropriate Interview Questions

Picture this.

You managed to get through the applicant tracking system and have scheduled an interview. The interview is going great. You’ve provided perfect examples to the interviewer’s behavioural questions and have found a natural flow to the conversation. You’ve even cracked a couple of relevant and tasteful jokes. Then, out of nowhere, your interviewer asks, “are you planning on having children?” You are totally thrown off your game but still want to display professionalism without necessarily giving up this private information.

This question is a prime example of an inappropriate interview question, one that is offensive, discriminatory, or illegal—and ultimately unrelated to your ability to perform the job. After spending hours preparing in-depth answers to every question under the sun, how do you respond to this one?

First, consider that the interviewer asked the inappropriate question out of ignorance. Interviewing may not be a primary function of that individual’s job, and they may not know that their question is not ok to ask. The chances are high that they are trying to be friendly. Consider the context and the environment to determine whether the question was asked in ignorance or malice.

Here are some suggestions on how to respond:

End the conversation.

If you considered the context and the environment and decided that the question was asked out of malice, the best option is to end the interview. You don’t want to work for an employer who openly discriminates during their selection process. Move on to an organization that is more respectful to its potential employees.

Ignore the question.

Redirect the conversation to a new topic. It may even help the interviewer realize their mistake, and they may appreciate the change to put it aside and move on.

Refuse to answer the question.

Politely explain that the topic is off-limits and that you are uncomfortable providing the requested information.

Choose to answer the question.

Provide a brief response. Tie it to the position being discussed and then strategically steer the discussion in another direction.

A good way to look at this type of scenario is to understand that you are in control over what happens after an inappropriate question. Most importantly, maintain respect and professionalism by staying calm and non-defensive. Prepare for this type of question like you prepare for any other interview question.
